Tiemann on serving two masters (Red Hat and the OSI)

The Open Source Initiative has seen its second change of leadership in just over a month. A huge challenge facing newly named president Michael Tiemann and the OSI is to ensure that the Red Hat executive's allegiances to his employer don't interfere with his judgement as the organization's leader--and vice versa. Last week, I talked with Tiemann about the roles played by the OSI and other open source organizations, open source license proliferation, and the volatile mixture of patents and software. http://ct.zdnet.com.com/clicks?c=65306-45018394&brand=zdnet&ds=5

Windows for supercomputers?

With the the use of clusters moving beyond government and academic settings, Microsoft is readying a beta of its first cluster version of Windows by summer, with the final version of Windows Server 2003 Compute Cluster Edition ready by the SC2005 supercomputing conference in November. Can Microsoft compete with Linux for supercomputing? I'm not surprised bythe torrent of TalkBacks from our readers. "There are several OSes on massively parallel clusters. Windows will have to compete with more than just Linus." -- shadowself http://ct.zdnet.com.com/clicks?c=65321-45018394&brand=zdnet&ds=5

"I'll take a non-spyware and virus targetted platform any day." -- plasticmonkeyz http://ct.zdnet.com.com/clicks?c=65322-45018394&brand=zdnet&ds=5

"Granted, reusability exists in the Unix/Linux world, but my subjective experience is that it is easier on Windows." -- John Carroll http://ct.zdnet.com.com/clicks?c=65323-45018394&brand=zdnet&ds=5

SOA, EDI: and the beat goes on

The vision propelling Patrick Grady and Rearden Commerce's employee business services platform reminds Joe McKendrick of another industry visionary from more than a decade ago--when Lew Jenkins was pushing the idea of supporting EDI over the Internet. "No big deal today," writes McKendrick, "but at the time, putting a critical business function on the still immature and unsecure Internet seemed risky, if not foolhardy." Today, some call Web services too immature. "It"s still up to the entrepreneurs and visionaries to prove the naysayers wrong, and figure out the way to deliver the goods." http://ct.zdnet.com.com/clicks?c=65324-45018394&brand=zdnet&ds=5

Stallman"s new campaign: Free the BIOS

AMD is cooperating "pretty well" while Intel's open source BIOS project is a "sham," says Free Software Foundation"s Richard Stallman. He suggests that buyers "help our campaign by buying AMD CPU chips and not buying Intel." Are you now going to buy and specify AMD, while ignoring Intel, over the issue of a free BIOS? Dana Blankenhorn reports. http://ct.zdnet.com.com/clicks?c=65327-45018394&brand=zdnet&ds=5

Mr. Chips takes a final bow

When he appeared at Intel's annual developer forum last week, Craig Barrett took the stage for the last time as the company's chief executive. But while the craggy-faced Barrett may be approaching official retirement, he has no intention of taking it easy. During a chat with reporters following his keynote speech, Barrett briefly took stock of his legacy and offered a look ahead at the technologies he believes will keep Intel ahead of its rivals. Intel sneaks more security into its chips

XD is a form of hardware-enforced buffer overflow protection that can stop certain malware dead in its tracks--but it needs an operating system to activate it. Last summer, after the feature (Microsoft calls it DEP) was introduced in SP2, David Berlind recommended that buyers cancel planned purchases of all non-DEP enabled systems. At the time, however, the only microprocessors that came with support for the feature were AMD's chips. Intel recently added DEP support but didn't tell anybody. Now buyers have to figure out which Intel-based systems have the technology-- and which don't. http://ct.zdnet.com.com/clicks?c=65334-45018394&brand=zdnet&ds=5

Intel's Talwalkar: Itanium unfazed by 32/64 hybrid success

Intel corporate VP and general manager Abhi Talwalkar and former CTO Pat Gelsinger share the helm of the company's newly formed Digital Enteprise Group -- a division with responsibility for the entire range of Intel's enterprise solutions. I sat down with Talwalker

just prior to last week's Intel Developer Forum. I got an update on everything from the chipmaker's go-forward strategy on Itanium, to the four-way processor "scale-up" limitation on the standard parts it sells to server vendors, to how Intel got Dell CEO Kevin Rollins to announce that his company was going to stay an Intel pure-breed. http://ct.zdnet.com.com/clicks?c=65337-45018394&brand=zdnet&ds=5

Outsourcing backlash replaced with indifference

Last year, each day seemed to bring a new study claiming that IT jobs where moving overseas in droves and that India, and later, China, were destined to take over the world. But now, writes ZDNet Research's Chris Jablonski, "it looks like outsourcing has shed much of its controversial aura while quietly reshaping the global marketplace." Why? "One reason could be that the idea of millions of domestic jobs disappearing because of offshoring was simply false." http://ct.zdnet.com.com/clicks?c=65340-45018394&brand=zdnet&ds=5

Brixlogic: Next generation XML services

The road to software development nirvana, built upon Web services and SOA, offers a lot of opportunity for new companies to help pave the way. One such company, startup Brixlogic, claims that its software overcomes much of the complexity and unreliability in developing Web services derived from custom or industry standard XML schemas. Its model-driven, iterative development environment is aimed at business people who have the domain expertise around the business process and can work with the visual tools. http://ct.zdnet.com.com/clicks?c=65341-45018394&brand=zdnet&ds=5

The secret sauce of Google's data center

News.com's Martin LaMonica reports on the technical wizardry behind Google's data center operations, including dealing gracefully with system failures among its thousands of home-grown, Linux-based PC servers. Urs Hoelzle, Google vice president of engineering and of operations, also talked about the company's custom software for writing programs that run across thousands of servers and for recovering programs that fail. http://ct.zdnet.com.com/clicks?c=65342-45018394&brand=zdnet&ds=5

2006: The year of dual core, virtualization, WiMax

Intel Developer Forum: The way Intel executives see it, 2006 will be a breakout year in processor performance, virtualization technology and wireless broadband. With all the focus on dual- and multicore systems from Intel and AMD (as well as Sun and IBM), buyers who value a major performance boost should consider holding off purchases until those systems ship. By mid-2006, says Gartner's Martin Reynolds, multicore processors and virtualization technologies will deliver the biggest single performance increase ever for many applications. http://ct.zdnet.com.com/clicks?c=65343-45018394&brand=zdnet&ds=5

Rearden Commerce transforms business services

Rearden Commerce's unique and likely successful product is an XML/Web services-based platform for orchestrating and automating travel, package shipping, conferencing and other business service requests for corporate employees and consumers. Founder and CEO Patrick Grady understands what it takes to win in his space. "We will be the lowest cost provider of services because of the stack we built," he says. If it can get a critical mass of business and consumer service providers and customers to map into the software stack, Dan Farber writes, Rearden Commerce just might live up to its hype. http://ct.zdnet.com.com/clicks?c=65345-45018394&brand=zdnet&ds=5
