Rearden Commerce transforms business services
Rearden Commerce's unique and likely successful product is an XML/Web services-based platform for orchestrating and automating travel, package shipping, conferencing and other business service requests for corporate employees and consumers. Rearden Commerce may not join eBay, Amazon and Google in the pantheon of companies significantly changing the global economy, but founder and CEO Patrick Grady understands what it takes to win in his space. "We will be the lowest cost provider of services because of the stack we built," he says. If it can get a critical mass of business and consumer service providers and customers to map into the software stack, Rearden Commerce just might live up to its hype. http://ct.zdnet.com.com/clicks?c=52498-45018394&brand=zdnet&ds=5

Eclipse lights up Java crowd
A little more than a year ago, detractors painted the Eclipse open-source project as nothing more than a ploy by IBM to sell its own software. Today, by most accounts, it's the center of innovation in the Java tools industry. This week's sold-out EclipseCon conference will fete its newest board members--IBM rivals BEA Systems, Sybase and Borland International--and detail the expanding list of development-related projects under Eclipse's purview. News.com's Martin LaMonica reports. http://ct.zdnet.com.com/clicks?c=52511-45018394&brand=zdnet&ds=5

CA's unified security management architecture
End-to-end secure identity and access management across multiple platforms and applications is one those gnarly, complex problems that confounds even the most fearless IT administrator. Computer Associates has taken a step toward simplifying the problem with its eTrust Security Management Architecture. Dan Farber talked with CA's Toby Weiss and Sam Greenblatt about the XML-based service, which is designed to aggregate and track assertions, create policies and grant authentication on platforms that call for it without modifying
underlying applications. http://ct.zdnet.com.com/clicks?c=52513-45018394&brand=zdnet&ds=5
Open attack on Wine
Joe Brockmeier sees Microsoft's decision to deny Wine users updates through Windows Update as another small victory for open source on the desktop. "For Microsoft to acknowledge and block Wine, it must be making at least a small dent in the market," writes Brockmeier. "Slowly, but surely, Linux is encroaching on the desktop market enough to make the folks at Microsoft more than a little nervous." http://ct.zdnet.com.com/clicks?c=52514-45018394&brand=zdnet&ds=5
How safe is your customer data?
Bank of America has joined a recent string of businesses that have lost consumer information. Backup tapes with records detailing the financial information of as many as 1.2 million government employees were lost in shipment to a backup center, the bank said Friday. Also last week, payroll processor PayMaxx acknowledged that a flaw had left some of its customers' W-2 forms accessible to the Internet. A few days earlier, data collection company ChoicePoint announced that it had given
information on approximately 150,000 subscribers to about 50 fraudulent businesses. "We need government regulation of personal data warehousing," writes CNET's Robert Vamosi, "and we need it now." http://ct.zdnet.com.com/clicks?c=52515-45018394&brand=zdnet&ds=5

Anytime, anywhere secure data access
The increasingly mobile workforce is now accustomed to accessing information from their corporate networks via phones, PDAs and laptops. That means businesses must be vigilant about securing wireless data. In this Audiocast, we outline the requirements for provisioning a wireless infrastructure that provides mobile users with secure access to corporate data and applications anytime, anywhere. http://ct.zdnet.com.com/clicks?c=52519-45018394&brand=zdnet&ds=5

Microsoft fires back in database price war
In a move that could lead to more price cuts in the database market, Microsoft yesterday introduced a lower cost version of its database software. SQL Server 2000 Workgroup, a version for small businesses priced at $3,899 per processor, is planned for the first half of this year, while the upcoming SQL Server 2005 update is due in the summer. With the revamped product suite, Microsoft intends to offer alternatives
to a range of rival software, including open-source products and databases from rivals Oracle and IBM, each of whom last year introduced lower-cost
editions of their databases in an effort to spur sales to medium-size customers. http://ct.zdnet.com.com/clicks?c=52530-45018394&brand=zdnet&ds=5

VoIP is ready for prime time--and it's going to hurt
For many weeks now, tech nomad Peter Cochrane has been experimenting with Skype. All his telephone calls--Skype-to-Skype, Skype-to-mobile and Skype-to-fixed line--have been made with headset and laptop computer. His mobile phone bill has plummeted from $500 a month to less than $10 a month. He's even purchased headsets for his children and colleagues and asked them to move to VoIP. Yes, the telecom industry is in big trouble. But who, asks Cochrane, will pay for the communications infrastructure if the money is taken out of the industry by services that charge nothing? http://ct.zdnet.com.com/clicks?c=52534-45018394&brand=zdnet&ds=5
