START-UPS OFFER BLOG AND E-MAIL MONITORING
I'm just back from the annual Demo conference, this year held in Scottsdale, Ariz. If you're not familiar with this 15-year-old event, the audience is usually a mixture of venture capitalists, the investment arms of high-tech companies, and the media. Every six minutes, representatives from a different company mostly startups appear on stage offering a new product or product idea that they hope will capture the notice of those in attendance. More than any one particular product, though, I typically find that the kind of products shown is a leading indicator of what business buyers are looking for. http://newsletter.infoworld.com/t?ctl=BE4D0A:353CA35

NO SIMPLE LIFE FOR COMPUTER USERS
It's no simple life for Paris Hilton these days. First her Sidekick address book was hacked and her celebrity friends' phone numbers were made public; then the hotel heiress' name became the bait for two different e-mail worms. http://newsletter.infoworld.com/t?ctl=BE4D08:353CA35

VALUE SERVERS FEEL THE STRAIN
In the off-the-shelf world of value servers, surmounting challenges to high availability is your job. Management solutions make remote observation easier, and clustering is getting closer to standard fare for OSes. http://newsletter.infoworld.com/t?ctl=BE4D0C:353CA35

STOCK YOUR WINDOWS ADMINISTRATION TOOLKIT FOR FREE
I'm test-driving the freeware version of AVG's Anti-Virus 7.0, and so far my hat's off. Not only does it seem as up-to-date as Symantec, it's definitely got less of a dragging impact on system resources. Before you get your hopes up, however, the free version of AVG's tool is slated solely for single-PC home-oriented use. Business accounts still must pay. http://newsletter.infoworld.com/t?ctl=BE4D09:353CA35

PRODUCT GUIDE: APPRO 4148HS-82
Running four 2.2GHz Opteron 848 processors, the Appro 4148HS-82 is no slouch on compute power, but the disk I/O subsystem could use some polish. The end result is a low-cost, power-heavy server that may fit best in databases, compute-farms, clusters, and other heavy processing applications.
