COURT GIVES MICROSOFT ANOTHER CHANCE IN EOLAS PATENT CASE

Microsoft, following an appeals court decision to throw out a $520 million patent infringement judgment leveled against it in a dispute brought by Eolas Technologies, stands a good chance of prevailing in a new court-ordered trial, some experts say. The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit in Washington, D.C. this week reversed a lower court's decision against Microsoft and ordered a new trial. In the case, Eolas and the University of California accused Microsoft of improperly including technology in the Internet Explorer Web browser that allows interactive content to be embedded in a Web site, a common practice...

AT IDF, BARRETT'S KEYNOTE IMPARTS A LESSON

As Intel shuts down IDF until the summer 2005 edition, having outlined its dual-core processor strategy, it would be a shame to leave one very odd but largely unreported event that took place during Craig Barrett's keynote address. It happened when he called Burt Rutan, head of Rutan Aircraft Factory up on stage. Rutan's SpaceShip One was the winner of the $10 million Ansari X prize for first commercial flight into space. Rutan made his pitch for taking chances to the audience filled with high tech hardware and software engineers and he complained about the lack of innovation in space...

YAHOO COURTS DEVELOPERS WITH SEARCH APIS

Yahoo is opening up its search technology to developers, with the announcement this week of the Yahoo Search Developer Network. The network resource gives developers Web services-based APIs that hook into the Yahoo search and Overture technologies. The Yahoo Search Developer Network offers the APIs and also offers resources, including sample code, tools, expertise, and the ability to display applications for other developers, according to Yahoo officials. Google made a similar move three years ago when it announced its Web search API, which lets developers create their own search applications using the Web services standards SOAP and WSDL. In addition,...

COURT THROWS OUT $520 MILLION PATENT RULING AGAINST MICROSOFT

A federal appeals court overturned a $520 million patent infringement judgment against Microsoft and ordered a new trial in the dispute brought by Eolas Technologies. In the case, Eolas and the University of California accused Microsoft of improperly including technology in the Internet Explorer Web browser that allows interactive content to be embedded in a Web site, a common practice on the Internet. Eolas sued Microsoft in 1999; the university later joined the suit, IDG News Service reported. A jury in August 2003 ruled against Microsoft and ordered the company to pay $520.6 million in damages. Judge James Zagel at...
