Intel Developer Forum: Extending Moore's Law
During this week's Intel Developer Forum, which comes at a juncture of huge opportunities and challenges for the chipmaker, outgoing CEO Craig Barrett and other company executives unfolded an ambitious roadmap covering a variety of multicore chips for the server, notebook, desktop and networking market. Moore's Law, Barrett predicted during his IDF swan-song keynote, will boost processor abilities for many years to come, with 5-nanometer chip manufacturing in the pipeline. And Intel, for the first time, named Big Blue as the prime target of the Itanium processor family. http://ct.zdnet.com.com/clicks?c=61487-45018394&brand=zdnet&ds=5

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ DAVID BERLIND'S PICKS
Could recent Microsoft clamp-downs, missteps accelerate Linux adoption?
Is it me, or has there been a recent wave of headlines from Redmond that add up to a Microsoft clamp-down of the sort that could easily drive people away from destkop Windows? The most recent of these--and drawing a heated reaction from some ZDNet readers--is a report that Microsoft will start requiring XP Service Pack 2 for Automatic Update users. Also last week, Microsoft announced that it would no longer support product activation over the Internet for PCs that have Windows pre-installed. Security-wise, it was a dismal week for Redmond as well. Is Microsoft driving you away? JOIN THE DISCUSSION http://ct.zdnet.com.com/clicks?c=61491-45018394&brand=zdnet&ds=5
The art of the desktop: PCs for creative pros
Creative professionals often require specific hardware and software combinations, which makes it difficult to pick an all-around PC for serious graphics work. Apple's Power Mac G5 is the industry standard for many types of design work, but we've seen some Windows-based PCs that are also up to the task. http://ct.zdnet.com.com/clicks?c=61492-45018394&brand=zdnet&ds=5
Battle of the cheap PCs: Mac Mini vs. Windows competitors
Mac fans on a tight budget or those searching for a cheap way to add another Mac at home will undoubtedly be drawn in by the Mac Mini's sleek design and low price. But what about the rest of us looking for an affordable computer? Before you decide where your budget dollars are best spent, see how Apple's new box stacks up against Windows competitors from Dell, eMachines, Gateway, and WinBook.
Make a call without minutes: push-to-talk phones
Nextel phones have always garnered a loyal following, and the company's Direct Connect push-to-talk (PTT) service has been a primary attraction. Functioning much like a walkie-talkie, PTT services allow callers with compatible cell phones to talk with each other over a secure, digital voice network. But Nextel has gained competition in this sector from Sprint PCS and Verizon Wireless. http://ct.zdnet.com.com/clicks?c=61494-45018394&brand=zdnet&ds=5
Is Eolas decision a victory for all?
A federal appeals court partially reversed a lower-court decision that had exposed Microsoft to $565 million in damages. The patent infringement case, brought by the University of California and its Eolas Technologies spinoff, had riled the Web over potential ripple effects. This announcement brought a mix of reactions in ZDNet TalkBack. George Jay jeers, "Money is all that is needed to show prior art. Want to challenge any of Microsoft's or IBM's patents... all you need is money." DrDavis cheers, "If Eolas had won, every other browser maker would have to either change their browser or pay money to Eolas for the object/plug-in HTML tag. So for once I'm glad that we have Microsoft on our side, as their win is for the good of all of us." Did the court make the right decision? Post your thoughts in TalkBack. http://ct.zdnet.com.com/clicks?c=61495-45018394&brand=zdnet&ds=5
Servers made simple
Whether you run a small business or a department inside a large enterprise, sooner or later you'll need a server. But servers require an IT department, right? Not necessarily. A new crop of systems from IBM, HP, and others are specifically designed to be easy enough for nonexperts to set up and manage. CNET editors review eight of these low-end servers--and offer advice and tools for matching a machine to your company's needs. http://ct.zdnet.com.com/clicks?c=61496-45018394&brand=zdnet&ds=5
Download professional protection
For businesses, a secure Internet connection isn't a convenience-- it's essential. Frequently updated, ZoneAlarm Pro 5.5.062.011 is rock-solid solution for big and small businesses like. http://ct.zdnet.com.com/clicks?c=61497-45018394&brand=zdnet&ds=5
How safe is your customer data?
Last week, Bank of America joined a recent string of businesses that have lost consumer information. Backup tapes with records detailing the financial information of as many as 1.2 million government employees were lost in shipment to a backup center. Also last week, payroll processor PayMaxx acknowledged that a flaw had left some of its customers' W-2 forms accessible to the Internet. A few days earlier, data collection company ChoicePoint announced that it had given
information on approximately 150,000 subscribers to about 50 fraudulent businesses. "We need government regulation of personal data warehousing," writes CNET's Robert Vamosi, "and we need it now." http://ct.zdnet.com.com/clicks?c=61498-45018394&brand=zdnet&ds=5
Why Microsoft should reveal SQL Server code John Carroll thinks that anyone with a valid license should have access to Microsoft's SQL Server source code. Rather than a polemic against proprietary software, John makes a practical argument and commends Microsoft's steps to release more source code. http://ct.zdnet.com.com/clicks?c=61502-45018394&brand=zdnet&ds=5
What's your game plan?
New games--like Doom 3, Half-Life 2, and World of Warcraft--are often a double-edged sword: In order to play them, you may need to make significant upgrades to your current PC configuration, if not purchase a new computer altogether. TiVo for beginners: choosing the right DVR
