COMPUTER SCIENTISTS IDENTIFY FUTURE IT CHALLENGES
A group of British computer scientists have proposed a number of
"grand challenges" for IT that they hope will drive forward
research, similar to the way the human genome project drove life
sciences research through the 1990s. Ambitious goals include harnessing
the power of quantum physics, building systems that can't go wrong,
and simulating living creatures in every detail.

IN BRIEF: U.S. SECURITY EXPERT SUES JAPANESE GOVERNMENT
A U.S. security expert is suing the Japanese government for ¥30
million ($291,000) for allegedly censoring his criticisms of Japan's
online citizens registry database, called Juki Net. In a lawsuit filed
against Japan's Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications, Ejovi
Nuwere, CTO of SecurityLab Technologies, in Boston, alleged that the
ministry stopped him from making a presentation in which he planned to
discuss his concerns about the security of the database. Juki Net has
been surrounded by controversy, particularly over security concerns,
since before its launch in 2003. Nuwere was one of three experts hired
by the government to test the security of the system. The experts
successfully managed to compromise servers in part of the system. Nuwere
had intended to describe these experiences in his talk.
