MONDAY 24 JANUARY 22:30 GMT - BBC TWO
FROM ROBBIE GIBB, PROGRAMME PRODUCER

Hello,

The Conservative Party today launched major new proposals on immigration. In the past, politicians have shied away from this most sensitive of issues but, with public concern rising, all parties seem to accept that it must now be discussed openly, and Newsnight will facilitate the debate.

The Tories plan an annual limit on immigration, quotas for refugees, points assessment for work permits, withdrawal from the 1951 United Nations Convention and 24 hour security at ports.

Tonight, we ask whether these policies can work. Jeremy will be talking to the Shadow Attorney General, Dominic Grieve, and we'll be joined by experts in the field.

It's a big week for the climate change debate. The International Climate Change Taskforce, co-chaired by Stephen Byers, will, for the first time, give a clear CO2 danger threshold for global warming. Susan Watts examines the science - and the politics - behind these events.

This afternoon, Foreign Secretary Jack Straw is meeting the new US Secretary of State, Condoleezza Rice, in Washington. The issues likely to be on the agenda include Iran, the Middle East and the proposed European lifting of the Chinese arms embargo. We get the latest from Stephanie Flanders.

Abu Musab al-Zarqawi has issued a chilling warning to Iraqi voters: "If You Vote You Die". Paul Mason continues his regular review of Iraqi blogs and websites to see how the threat has gone down.

On Wednesday, Charles Saatchi, perhaps Britain's leading modern art collector and dealer, opens a new exhibition at his London gallery entitled 'The Triumph of Painting'. Newsnight's Stephen Smith has full and exclusive access to the works. We'll be asking: does this signal the end of the Brit-Art era?

Newsnight is 25 years old this week. Tonight we have the first of five short packages celebrating the programme's best moments. Following the current trend of issuing coloured wristbands to support good and not-so-good causes, we launched a competition to design an anniversary bracelet for Newsnight. Tune in to admire the winning entry, but if you can't wait until then, click here!

See you at 10:30.

Robbie
